Archaeological Collections Closed January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2010
ANNOUNCEMENT
ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS CLOSED
at the
Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology
January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010
Construction of the Center for New Mexico Archaeology, including a new repository for the archaeological collections of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology, is slated to begin in early 2009. In order to prepare for the largest collections move in the Museum’s history (10 million ± objects), our staff will need time to inventory and prepare the collections in the various storage areas, as well as to move and re-organize them in the new state-of-the-art central location at the CNMA.
In lieu of the time required to conduct a successful move, the archaeological artifact collections will be closed to researchers beginning January 1, 2010 and continuing until at least December 31, 2010. No loan requests for archaeological material will be accepted from December 1, 2009 until December 31, 2010. The only exception to this closure will be the Reference & Type Collections in the H.P. Mera Room. These collections will remain open for research only, by appointment, until April 1, 2010, and remain closed until December 31, 2010.
Circumstances may arise during the next 2 years that will force the Museum to keep the collections closed to research and/or loans beyond December 2010. If that need arises, we will circulate a notice to that effect as soon as feasible.
