CLEARLY INDIGENOUS

Conversations on Glass Art: Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi)

May 4, 2022
10:00 am through 11:00 am

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) invites you to virtually join Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi) for the last iteration of our lecture series surrounding our current exhibition, "Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass."

Raven Skyriver has created a stunning body of works in glass, of sleek lined fish and other animals that live in and around water. Growing up on Lopez Island in Washington, in the Puget Sound, Skyriver developed a reverence for the sea and its creatures. He has devoted his artistic endeavors to the creation in blown glass of realistic, yet surreal, sea creatures such as salmon, sea lions, whales, and otters.

Dan Friday has become a leading glass artist over the past decade. While he has honed his technical expertise in working with glass, he has also developed an approach to the content or meaning of his glass art that tells the story of his traditional culture in a contemporary context. His work is sculptural and often depicts stylized birds, fish, or other creatures that are prominent in the history or stories of his tribe, the Limmi Nation, part of the Coast Salish culture.
